The story is set in Hawaii in the early 20th century. In an odd turn of events, King Kalakaua requests protection from Emperor Meiji from the United States during his visit to Japan in 1881, a request which is happily granted.
With tensions rising between the Empire of Japan and the United States, Emperor Meiji takes advantage of the situation, docking several warships into Pearl Harbor, landing troops, and effectively turning the kingdom into a Japanese colony.
In 1905, Emperor Meiji orchestrates a violent coup, executing Queen Liliuokalani, seizing complete control of the islands. Hawaii soon finds itself absorbed into the Empire as the newest, southernmost prefecture, known as Eika-Ken, meaning "the prefecture of eternal summer."
The story follows the lives of the average people caught in the conflict; the Hawaiian monarchy loyalists who struggle to stay true to who they are, the remaining American settlers, and of course, the average Japanese citizens living and working in the islands.
