Set in the medieval-adjacent fantasy world of Terhia during the harsh winter phase of the black moon Velquor, **"Benefice"** follows **Talenai Surmera**, a cost-reader for the Cobalt Ledger, and **Zabid Huzukar**, a witty Master Apostle sent by the Indigo Assay. Together with a stoic guard (Soren) and an herbalist corridor guide (Shulie), they set out to investigate a claimed "gold miracle" at the Whitereed Shrine, where a mass healing allegedly occurred under an out-of-phase sky.
Along the way, the party survives an ambush by Unsworn mercenaries and allies with **Daymeen Vroth**, an Off-Ledger Necromancer who reveals a horrifying secret: nineteen victims of a manufactured "wet-lung" plague all died simultaneously, their bodies moved in crates for the Black Meridian smuggling network. The group discovers a corrupt conspiracy run by Archpriest Viro Mahrz, who intentionally poisoned locals using adulterated shrine lamps, harvested the dead, and then staged a fake "miracle" to claim a lucrative Crown benefice.
At Whitereed Shrine, Talenai and Zabid publicly expose Viro's fraud by proving he used disguised Elemental fire and fuel lines rather than genuine Divine magic. When Viro ignites the yard in retaliation, Zabid pushes his Divine healing abilities to their ultimate limit to protect the crowd, aging rapidly as a result of the magic's heavy cost. Soren slays Viro, but the immense strain exhausts Zabid's remaining lifespan, and he dies peacefully-having spent his "wallet" of life to save hundreds.
In the aftermath, the fraudulent benefice is voided, the Meridian network is disrupted, and Daymeen is quietly given gloves and allowed to walk free. Talenai officially logs Zabid's sacrifice in the Ledger, noting that while the immediate threat was stopped, a second keyholder to the corrupt account remains hidden within the Crown.
