"Most kids can't answer their favorite things, but I can! My favorite color is purple! No, lavender. I want to be a pilot or a fashion designer when I grow up. I love to eat French fries!!" A young Nayvie chirped, during her routine check in with her doctor. Missing a few teeth, she smiled brightly; beaming like the sun over the ocean during a sunset; gleaming and impossible to miss.
Nayvie Kenyi, an awkward, charismatic, intelligent, kind-fifteen-year-old girl. African American, with dark skin, the brownest eyes, signature bohemian braids, coordinated outfits, jokes, intellect, awkwardness, and originality. She comes from a family of designers; denim creators, with a substantial business in the jean industry; fashion is in her blood.
And so is her love for art and creativity; expressing herself however she knows how, despite her being colorblind; instead of letting it define her as the odd one out in a family full of creative innovators, she adapted her own brand and shone through what she knew best: the color purple. The color she'd always answered to, gifts she'd ask for, she even painted her room walls purple; it's who she is. People have signatures, things they're known for, their thing. Lavender; purple, would always be hers, right?
As the beginning of the school year approaches, she realizes the inevitable change that high school brings, a flight of emotions that turns her into an unexpected version of herself; new interests, friends, growth, relationships, ideas, and eventually acceptance. Emotions she didn't anticipate begin to paint her world in colors she never imagined. Nayvie's challenge isn't just surviving change-it's learning to soar, to propel herself forward, even when the waves of teenage life threaten to pull her under.
