Never trust what your eyes beg you to believe- they're the easiest liars to fool. It's the thing coiled deep in your gut, that quiet, sickening pull... that's where the truth festers. Because the moment you choose the vision over the feeling- is the moment it decides you're ready for your end. The basement breathed out a suffocating dampness, stagnant soup of salt-vinegar chips, the sharp taste of iron overheated gaming consoles, and the frantic energy of a Friday night with no curfew. The room was a chaotic nest of tangled charging cables and discarded soda cans, illuminated by the rhythmic, neon pulse of the TV screen. Aroan and the guys were in the zone. The "clack-clack-clack" of mechanical controllers provided a percussive backbeat to their raucous, belly-deep laughter. Between rounds of a high-octane fighter game, they huddled around a glowing smartphone. The harsh, artificial glare of a ring light cast ghostly halos around their faces as they filmed exaggerated, wide-eyed skits for their VidaTube channel. Every outrageous reaction and scripted scream was a bid for the digital jackpot-that sweet, elusive surge of viral fame that promised a life of stable income and "Big Gamer" status. But as the clock ticked past midnight, the bright colors of the games gave way to the sickly, flickering yellow of a browser window. They began to scroll through the "Backdoors" forums. The screen was filled with grainy, low-bitrate footage of liminal spaces-hallways that stretched into impossible geometries and heavy oak doors that seemed to breathe. It was a horror facade that had captivated the internet, a labyrinth of speculation where no two stories ever quite matched. While the rest of the world made parodies and cheap jump-scare edits, a cold, ambitious itch began to scratch at the back of Aroan's mind.
