Thorin and his nephews are freshly installed in the Shire when Kíli meets his soulmate. Said soulmate working for Bilbo Baggins' flower shop, one thing leads to another and Thorin ends up meeting him.

It is here, as lies at the base of the tree the dream fresh in his mind, that he remembers.He remembers the good... "Did you here that lads? He says we'll blunt the knives." The bad... "Take him... and no friendship of mine goes with him." And all the things in between... "... I found something in the Goblin tunnels. My courage."

He spent most days watching the sky, or curled up in his armchair by the fireplace. He never lit the wood though. The fire reminded him too much of Smaug, the way the vast dragon had scorched and burned, flames licking through Laketown and Erebor.
