The first time she met Xing Congning was at her grandmother's funeral. A light rain was falling, incense was burning all around, and Buddhist scriptures were being chanted. An attendant respectfully held an umbrella, and he stood under it, exchanging pleasantries with her father. Before leaving, her father called for You Zhiyi to come forward and offer her greetings. Through the misty rain, she looked up. The man's features were cold and aloof, untouched by worldly concerns, yet possessed boundless elegance. Her father pondered for a moment before introducing him, "According to seniority, you should call him-" Before he could finish the correct address, he looked at her, smiling slightly as he interrupted, "Just call me Xing Congning." At that time, You Zhiyi only knew that he was a powerful figure her father couldn't afford to offend in the business world. - Their next meeting was on a snowy early spring day. The night was still, a light snow was falling. He had come to pick her up at the request of a friend. In a teahouse on an old street, the man, holding an umbrella in one hand, slowly walked through the swaying snow. As the crisp sound of his footsteps on the snow stopped, the latticed window of the two-story shop creaked open a crack. A wisp of snow fell, and he stopped in front of her. Snowflakes fell on his shoulders, and the man, with eyebrows like ink dots, said in a gentle voice, "Miss You, I am Xing Congning. Qingrui asked me to pick you up." - The Xing family's villa was called Plum Garden. You Zhiyi was the first female guest to stay there. One morning, as usual, she woke up to find that it was snowing lightly outside again, and she stepped barefoot outside. I had it all: the brains, the beauty, the fortune, and the popularity. I was queenbee and valedictorian-- the Golden Girl of Jackson Woods High, but I was also known as a 'mean girl' to a selective some, mainly known as the losers. I was problematic and polarizing. People either admired me or hated me; admittedly, some within reason. One of my biggest hater was Peter Foster, the school's uppity pariah. We've hated each other since the first day he moved here in freshmen year. Our animosity towards each other reached its peak when one of our arguments inadvertently hospitalized our high school counselor, Mrs. Boyle, almost sabotaging my status as valedictorian. After that, principal Johnson expected us to set aside our differences and learn to get along by forcing us to help in an animal shelter every Saturday. People wouldn't have thought it, but I had enough problems and I didn't need that brooding loner to add more.
