Beirut, 2016. Karim is twenty-seven, overworked at a dead-end start-up, underpaid, and restless. He spends his days shuttling between a cramped apartment he shares with his soon-to-be-married sister and the city's chaotic streets, where Uber rides and late-night shawarma eat away at his salary. By night, he sneaks lovers past closed doors and wonders whether love is even possible in a city split between tradition and rebellion. Karim drifts through long workdays, late-night taxis, and secret desires, until a chance connection with a quiet driver pulls him into a web of temptation, power, and hidden lives. A Declaration of Love is a bold, intoxicating portrait of Beirut's contradictions. Its glamour and grit, its freedom and repression-and of one man caught between passion and self-preservation.

A security source said victims were taken for treatment outside the city because Beirut hospitals were overwhelmed with wounded. Ambulances from the north and south of the country and the Bekaa valley to the east were called in to help. A powerful blast in port warehouses near central Beirut storing highly explosive material killed 78 people, injured nearly 4,000, and sent seismic shockwaves that shattered windows, smashed masonry, and shook the ground across the Lebanese capital. Officials said they expected the death toll to rise further after Tuesday's blast as emergency workers dug through rubble to rescue people and remove the dead. It was the most powerful explosion in years in Beirut, which is already reeling from an economic crisis and a surge in coronavirus infections. President Michel Aoun said that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, used in fertilizers and bombs, had been stored for six years at the port without safety measures, and said it was "unacceptable". He called for an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday and said a two-week state of emergency should be declared.

"There's a bomb!" someone shouted. "There's a bomb!" I had just collected 'NME' from the newsagent that reserved it for me each week and had been lazily staring at a display of the new 'designer' stretch jeans in the windows of Gloria Vandebilt's shop. All had been calm on the city's main shopping street. Then suddenly it was chaos. People ran in all directions as if their lives depended upon it ... which they did. Men, women and children screamed as they fled down side streets, their shopping bags flying behind them like parachutes. I was in amongst them, running at full pelt until I thought I was far enough away from the suspect device. How would I know? I didn't. Did I hear an explosion? No. Was it really a bomb? I never knew.

Being a keen traveler, who documents the lives of women encountered, visiting Beirut in Lebanon last year was an eye-opener. Over 250,000 African and South East Asian women, are employed in the country as domestic maids. They have no employment or legal protection and instead are governed by their employers, under the kafala system. This lead them to be strictly controlled by employers, who often treat them harshly and they are exposed to physical and psychological abuse, in more extreme cases, sexual violence, torture and murder. The following are based on my observations while in Beirut.

In the vibrant, chaotic city of Beirut, a place where the Mediterranean's waves collided with crumbling shores, a boy named Johny was born. His home was nestled deep in the heart of the city, surrounded by the echoes of honking cars, the smell of shawarma and freshly baked mankoushe from street vendors, and the perpetual buzz of life. Beirut, with its mix of old and new, of resilience and devastation, was a place where dreams were often born but rarely fulfilled. For Johny, those dreams seemed distant, stolen by circumstances no child should have to face. His life, like the city he loved, was one of survival and loss, and the battles he fought came far too early.

Opus Dei - the work of God – in this case, the work of the hidden god. From an attack on the streets of Beirut during the civil war till the incredible climax in 2016, this strange tale of conspiracy and intrigue is sure to grip the reader. Opus Dei has an intensely human aspect to the story. It is the love relationship between Pierre Zein and Danielle. And it is their struggle, with a young family, to survive in a country divided by conflict. “A leader is about to arise. A man who will seize Europe and overpower her as a man takes a woman. He will dominate her and she will serve him. This man’s name is war…” This prophecy by the Twelfth Imam of the Shiites leads Pierre Zein, a journalist, to investigate the dark forces behind the scenes intent on creating a New World Order. In Israel an attack is launched against the Iranian nuclear installations, while on the same night a right-wing group raze the Dome of the Rock plunging the region into war. By the intervention of one man, a new Order comes into being - one that is ultimately intended to destroy the Holy Land. Opus Dei reveals the secrets concealed beneath the pyramids of Egypt, and the ultimate secret of the Knights Templar. These are the hidden things, the desire of ages, over which wars have been fought and are destined to be fought again. A game is played between two men and two powers – Islam’s Al Mahdi, and the leader of the Order. Only one man can win and the winner takes all. The work of the hidden god is almost complete. The intended New World Order is well-documented. Opus Dei reveals its beginning and more importantly, its end. It discovers the confluence of politics, mythology and Biblical prophecy. As fresh as tomorrow’s newspaper, this novel was written over many years. It is deeply researched and carefully crafted.
