Undertale: Black Heart - Volume 1
For generations, monsters have remained trapped beneath the surface.
With no freedom in sight, the Underground has changed. Monsters have adapted to its harsh environment, becoming stronger, more aggressive, and, in some cases, twisted by generations of survival.
Yet there are still moments of peace.
Chara and Asriel are two children who spend their days exploring the Underground together. During one of their games, Asriel teaches Chara about monster souls and discovers something strange about Chara's Soul Trait: a red soul surrounded by a black outline.
Neither of them knows what the black means.
They plan to ask Sans.
But before they get the chance, everything changes.
Chara suddenly attacks New Home, leaving destruction throughout the kingdom and forcing some of the Underground's strongest warriors into battle. Gerson and Undyne fight desperately to stop them, while Sans investigates the mysterious cause of Chara's transformation.
His investigation leads him back into the abandoned True Lab, where he discovers forgotten experiments involving Determination, gravitational magic, and the mysterious Singularity Eye implanted into him when he was young.
As the battle reaches its breaking point, Sans is forced to activate the full power of his experimental eye and confront Chara himself.
But defeating Chara isn't enough.
Something else is inside their soul.
Something that isn't Determination.
Something Sans eventually identifies as HATE.
After extracting the mysterious energy from Chara's soul, the immediate crisis appears to be over.
But the investigation has only raised more questions.
Why did Chara's soul already possess a black outline?
What exactly is HATE?
Why did it react to Sans' Singularity Eye?
And what really happened to the Royal Scientist who created it?
Deep beneath the Underground, an ancient laboratory begins to awaken.
And something that should have remained gone...
is coming back.
