Thus do loyalty and liberty send two very different souls on paths that will change their lives forever. And when those paths intersect, it will lead them to a place that neither could have predicted - but only if they can both survive.

Dorothy is a black girl living in New Orleans, Louisiana and everything is segregated. The hair salon that she would never be allowed to step inside, the ice cream parlor that she passes by everyday that would never even allow her to try their vanilla milkshakes, and the bookstore where her crush, Alan McHenry, a white boy who would never give her a second glance, works at. Dorothy hates that she's discriminated against because of her skin color, but that's going to change this school year, when she finally stands up for herself and makes them see her.

Black hands and Black skin what is this? In a society where this skin is a sin. Trying my best to hold on to the things I cling to to put on to look. Beautiful. They are ashamed when I step out even with my classy, eloquent, knowledgeable self. To them my black is not beautiful. So judgmental. I stand high and proud. Because My Black is Beautiful. So why is my black not beautiful to them.
