She didn't realise it until years later however, when they were 16 and Gilbert had a girlfriend, Winnifred. Anne: "Winnifred is a lucky girl", she looked at him solemnly as she stated this, "I should go back". She quickly stood up and walked back into the school. Gilbert were left pondering at her words. Does she like him, if so, why did she tell him that she didn't need him, that day on the train. Will Anne ever open up about her past demons to Gilbert?
