When 12-year-old Evie Stone inherits a boring-looking antique metronome from her grandmother, nothing can prepare her for the adventure that will follow. For it is no ordinary antique: the metronome is a time machine. But the device appears to have a will of its own, pitching Evie and her friends into often deadly situations. Her travels don't go unnoticed: she is being watched by the mysterious outfit known only as the Company, an organisation as old as the time machine itself, and one which is hellbent on getting its hands on the device. The Company's net is closing, and people Evie once trusted seem to be in on it. In the end, Evie's only hope might just be the curious Alice figure that keeps appearing in quite the unlikeliest of places...and times.
