Nicole Abrey is a 27-year-old antique dealer running Abrey & Found, a shop she inherited from her mother. But that wasn't all she inherited. Through her matrilineal bloodline, she also has the ability to see and interact with the dead. A reaper named Caelum arrives at her shop to collect the soul of Danny, a recently deceased boy, and Nicole intervenes. The interference triggers an involuntary cosmic bond between Nicole and Caelum, tethering them together and trapping him in the mortal realm. Their bond can only be broken by Nicole's death. Caelum, sensing corruption in the otherworldly Bureau, reveals that Nicole's name is in his ledger under a Continuance order, a filing reserved for souls with a specific cosmic function of killing her prematurely, marked as "cause of death: TBD." The bond has made the Bureau nervous, causing them to hasten the kill order. Nicole and Caelum initiate a bond reinforcement to add a layer of protection, allowing Caelum to touch mortals, something he couldn't previously do. But the bond does something more. It allows them to explore unsettling feelings of attraction that Nicole didn't expect to have for a reaper and Caelum didn't expect to have for a human. Together, Nicole and Caelum must fight, dodge, and outsmart reapers, death angels, the Assessor, members of the Bureau, and the mysterous entity known as The Architect who set the whole plan in motion, all while dealing with the distraction of falling in love!
