"You're in The Fires of Bel? On Broadway?" How exciting!"
Oh, really? Are you referring to the mind-numbing experience of doing the same show, eight times a week, for months on end? Or, perhaps you're referring to working with all those gorgeous, glamorous, Broadway stars - like the ones who are terrified of open doors or have no qualms about throwing heavy objects at unsuspecting aides.
Not that I'm complaining. After all, this is what I've always dreamed of - performing in a Big Broadway Musical. Isn't it? Well? Isn't it?
Written in the manner of The Nanny Diaries, Devils, Divas and Me follows Ally Larimer, the blossoming Broadway talent, as she negotiates her way in the high-stakes world between the fictitious, reigning Diva, Hélène Blanc, and the younger, more attractive, Beauty Queen co-star, Catherine Silver, whose lack of experience or professional decorum hardly prevents her from basking under the neon lights of Broadway. As the musical opens and becomes a hit, Ally must contend with the frustrations that come with the soulless job of an understudy. Her status with the company seems to shift daily, depending on whether the capricious Beauty Queen she has been hired to cover deigns to do her job. Catherine complains about her wig and locks herself in her dressing room, refusing to come out. She "collapses" backstage, just days before her vacation. She calls in sick - from Yankee Stadium.
All of which places Ally in a dilemma. She desperately wants to move on, to create her own role. But is she ready to renounce the lure of the golden handcuffs that keep her from fulfilling her dreams? And even more importantly, exactly what are those dreams?
