Coming home was supposed to be temporary. She joins the local volunteer rescue unit, expecting quiet jobs, familiar faces and a chance to put her life back together. Instead, she finds herself learning an entirely different kind of rescue. Cows trapped in dams. Boats stranded on flooded rivers. Trees across lonely roads. Lost bushwalkers. Bogged trucks. The rural unit may not see the large-scale emergencies she's used to, but every call teaches her something new - and firefighter Matt seems determined to make sure she learns it properly. For the first time in years, she finds herself surrounded by people who don't compete with her, don't need her to prove herself, and don't expect her to be anything other than exactly who she is. Soon enough, friendship with Matt turns into something neither of them expected, and the town begins to feel less like the place she ran back to and more like somewhere she might actually belong.

The Emergency was Ireland's tense, tightrope walk through the chaos of World War II. On September 2, 1939, as Nazi Germany invaded Poland, Irish Prime Minister Éamon de Valera called a special session of parliament to declare that Ireland would remain strictly neutral to protect its fragile, newly independent nation. To bypass constitutional restrictions and grant the government sweeping wartime control without officially using the word "war," parliament rapidly passed the Emergency Powers Act on September 3, 1939. This single piece of legislation put the Emergency into power, giving the government total authority to censor the press, ration scarce food and fuel, and arrest suspected spies. For the next six years, the Irish people lived in a surreal state of isolation-navigating blackouts, burning turf for heat, and watching the skies for bombers, all while their government used ironclad legal powers to keep the global conflict at arm's length.
