The war had lasted hundreds of years.
Civilisation was all but wiped out. Those who survived had to learn to make do. They lived in the ruins of destroyed buildings and had to learn how to hunt their own food. When the Wall went up and the city was deemed safe, focus turned to rebuilding. The men were sent out to hunt, build, and maintain the Wall, and the women worked on cooking, cleaning, and mending. The children were put to work learning about times past so as not to lose valuable history.
It became tradition. School until eighteen. Then they were designated a Sponsor who would teach them their place in society. Then they would have to find a partner; someone to have children with so the cycle could restart.
But Skylar doesn't believe in any of that. And she's willing to fight for what she believes in, just like so many women before her.
