Quando un gruppo di ricercatori scopre una nuova specie di Medusa, la Blue Wave, nelle profondità oceaniche e la sua capacità di "assorbire" la Coscienza di un altro essere vivente e preservarla intatta, il mondo cambia completamente. E' iniziata l'era dei NewMan (NM), androidi biosintetici in grado di ospitare la Coscienza di un essere umano. Nel 2032 d.C l'epidemia Black Covid minaccia di ridurre drasticamente la popolazione mondiale e il programma Blue Pass consente solo ai più ricchi e alle menti più eccelse del mondo di effettuare il "Trasferimento di Coscienza" all'interno dei nuovi corpi. I NM scoprono col tempo, però, di non poter provare più nulla, che si tratti di piacere o dolore. Le loro coscienze, intrappolate in un corpo artificiale, corrono il rischio d'impazzire. A questo scopo nascono i Blue Frame, estratti emotivi liquidi, prelevati dal sangue di essere umani originali. I Blue Frame contengono il "ricordo vivo di un'emozione" e consentono alle Coscienze segregate nei NM di provare passivamente "qualcosa". L'umano sottoposto al prelievo ricorda l'esperienza, ma viene privato totalmente dell'emozione che la rendeva viva. Ed ecco che i Sapiens rimasti vengono suddivisi in tre categorie: Umani di Allevamento, Umani Liberi e Selvatici. Gli allevati sono costretti a vivere emozioni specifiche, secondo i desideri dei propri padroni, al solo scopo di preparare Blue Frame. Vivono all'interno di Fattorie Private e sono tenuti sotto stretta sorveglianza. Ai Liberi è concesso di vivere in colonie. E' possibile acquistare la libertà solo realizzando un punteggio elevato e il punteggio si misura in base alla qualità delle emozioni trasferite. I Selvatici, di contro, sono esseri umani liberi che hanno rifiutato il "marchio" digitale sulla mano destra e sfuggono al controllo dell'IA mondiale, chiamata Blue Sistem.
