Haunted by increasingly sexual dreams of Uhtred, King Alfred struggles leading Wessex whilst battling his sinful desires. As rumours of a new Dane force spread, Alfred defies Uhtred's advice and sets off on a journey to protect Mercia's lands, and hopefully find divine guidance. It all goes wrong when Alfred is captured by the new Dane army disguised as holy monks. When Uhtred rides to save him he too is captured. The two men are forced into closeness in an underground dungeon as tensions in Wessex rise, and Aethelflaed, her men, and Uhtred's men are on the hunt to rescue them.

When Finan wants to learn Latin, Osferth is all too happy to help him along. What Finan does not realise, however, is that Osferth has a trick or two up his sleeve.
