Se acerca a la cultura africana y mestiza de Marmato, similar a la de Istmina, con eficacia mayor que la de un sociólogo, antropólogo o historiador. Muestra cómo la explotación, el asesinato y la violencia no comenzaron en Colombian con el crimen de Jorge Eliecer Gaitán, pues eran vigentes en la década de los treinta. El nombre de la obra se debe a que los mineros rechazaban a los médicos de la empresa, porque creen en los hechizos, los brebajes y las brujerías. El historiador Jairo Henry Arroyo Reina da cuenta en el prólogo del mundo en que sucede la novela: "Un contexto en el cual el ritmo del tiempo y la vida son definidos por la marimba y el tambor, los pasos del currulao y los desenfrenos del cuerpo desnudo. Contrasta con las racionalidades dominantes que han logrado definir el tiempo y disciplinar el cuerpo desde el eje de la producción".
