In Gilead the daughters are only given schooling that primarily focuses on domestic arts such as crochet, gardening and music. However, when the daughters turn 16 they must attend a school to learn the duties of a Wife so that when they turn the marriageable age of 17 they will be prepared to lead the life of a Wife to a Commander. These simple duties, however, do not interest Mary as she secretly dreams about science and literature.
