She didn't have to fight titans, just come up with weapons and contraptions that would prevent them from breaking down the walls that protected humanity. However, the discovery of a human having the ability to transform into a titan changed all of that, causing her to leave her current military position for a new, much more dangerous one. However, that doesn't stop Levi from proving them wrong and avenging his friends' deaths. When he protects his comrades during a mission, Erwin sees potential in him.
