Maxwell, 19, is released from prison after two years on drug charges. With no one to turn to, not even a ride back to the unpromising city of Los Angels, he turns to hitchhiking.

Once upon a time a friend said to me: "Do you know some people are kissed by luck and flying through life like birds, but you are different. You can not fly and nobody wants to kiss you, but you have a really sweet relationship with misfortune.". Sadly, she was right with this statement. Maybe at the beginning everything looked like a fun adventure but it turned into something bigger than a little trip through this country.

James Johnson is a tenth grade boy who never had friends, he was always one to get bullied, hurt and much worse. James was very poor and his parents... Always thought of him as a mistake. No matter how well he achieved something, they'd never give any acknowledgement.. One day as James was on his way to school, he passed a nearby alleyway, he saw a boy who was about his age and grade getting pushed around by a few of his own bullies. He wanted to stop it so he interfered, protecting the boy... On another particular day, James's parents kicked him out.. On his way he mets the same boy... And so begins their adventures.

Much like his first collection, "Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers," Alex C. Telander's new short story collection, "In That Quiet Earth," runs the gamut of genres, showing his extensive breadth and range as writer. Readers will not be disappointed and will find a number compelling storylines and complex characters to become engaged in reading about. The collection kicks off with a short piece exploring a man who is changing in a way he doesn't want to. "The Lonesome Road" is one of the first stories Telander wrote, and goes into depth about the security we feel in everyday life, and what happens when that is suddenly taken away. Some other interesting stories include "Outside the Chamber," exploring the role of Nazis charged with gassing victims, to a classic fantasy tale in "The Adventure of Lem, Odo and Tom," and ending with "Motion in Motion," a unique stream of consciousness story unlike any other. The collection also features two sneak peeks at two of Telander's future novels. The collection is a broad and fascinating one, providing something for everyone, leaving readers at the end wanting more and waiting for Alex C. Telander's next work.

As sophomore year begins, Cutie falls for the new girl, O'Murphy Scott, but her mouth is set for the wrong sort of boys: Scooter Andersen, an abusive biker boy; and Richie, a banker's grandson who can't be seen with a girl from the wrong side of town. Murph rejects Cutie, but he's nevertheless a victim of mistaken identity. Scooter suspects the often-missing Murph is with Cutie. After a disastrous fight with Scooter and his bully brothers, Pickle and Spit, Cutie is told not to come back to school. A suicide fails so, fleeing physical, sexual and emotional abuse from his whiter brother Biggy, Cutie hitchhikes to California during the Summer of Love, where he hopes to find his Marine father and learn how to fight. Along that 1,700-mile odyssey, Cutie learns from his rides, a series of mentors who include a Cajun truck driver, a van full of hippies, and a defrocked priest who cruises the highways seeking boys. Cutie finds a home at the Full Circle, a communal restaurant in Palo Alto, but he must wait for weeks beside the post office box for his father, whom he hasn't seen in six years. Cutie meets Brother Love, a postal worker, street preacher and psychologist who completes Cutie's education and arms him to emotionally complete his hero's journey, understand his life, and fight his battles. When Cutie returns to Oklahoma, he finds Spit and Pickle assaulting Murph. He fights off the Andersens and earns the respect of Murph and, finally, his brother Biggy.

The Pumpkin King met the gypsy in the crystal ball, Madame Leota. She told him a way out of the Haunted Mansion. When they faced their darkest fear in room 999, they are freed from the eternal entrapment. The Addams kooky couple are freed as well. The whole Addams family are reunited. And now, a day after Halloween, something bothers Jack Skellington since he came to The Haunted Mansion. The curse of the Gracey Manor is still active. The Pumpkin King cannot let go of how almost a thousand ghosts (999) were stuck in that mansion. Jack believes there's evil phantoms in that manor. By determining to break the Gracey Manor curse, Jack Skellington must encounter the dangerous and the cunning spirits of the Haunted Mansion...

Ruby "Dilemma" McNair is remarkable. She doesn't excel in school or in any of the ways that her parents dream of, but she is, however, skilled at some things. A story of adventure and travel by hitchhiking from Asia to Europe and back and the fabulous experiences and nightmares along the way. I hope, readers will find it as interesting as were my experiences at the time. Finally, I hope some young people reading the story will be encouraged to discover those parts of the world that they have always wanted to go to, but have never been.

Hitchhiking has never been safe, I knew this better than anyone, but he was like something out of a movie. I just wished I knew that the genre would be horror.
