Ich drogi skrzyżowały się na planie filmowym ''Life '' gdzie obydwoje grali (w simsy). Potem zaczęli występować w spotach reklamujących ten film. Na jedynym z nich zaszło jednak do czegoś więcej niż przyjaźń (ze strony Ryana oczywiście). Reynolds zaczął pisać do Gyllenhaal'a (czyt. Ilenhol lub Jelenhule).
