This story follows two boys who are deeply in love but terrified to admit it not just to the world but to each other. Both of them are trapped in homes where LGBTQ+ is seen as wrong, sinful, or something to be ashamed of.
The main character, Raine, lives with their mother, who is openly homophobic and emotionally unstable. She drinks heavily, and when she does, her anger and cruelty surface even more. Raine has learned to stay quiet, to make themselves smaller, hiding who they are just to survive under her roof. The male lead, Audrey, comes from a deeply religious household. His father is a strict Christian who believes that being gay or trans is "the devil's work." He uses religion as a weapon, preaching love while practicing intolerance. Audrey has grown up fearing that if the truth about himself ever comes out, he'll lose his family entirely.
