Jackson had worked on a serum to successfully split them into two separate bodies, being so confident in himself he makes a mistake. Instead of testing the serum on something or another, he immediately tested the serum on himself. That resulted in a successful split with many, many downsides. Yes, they now had separate bodies, but was it worth it if only one of them made it?

For all they know, this forest has weird happenings around it as well as in it. As soon as they enter it, they realize what horror they just put themselves in just by being in the wretched place.
