Five months after the events of Crooked Kingdom, Inej returns to Ketterdam for the first time. Kaz has settled in to his role as the leader of the Dregs, and Wylan's mission to get Jesper to channel his love of gambling into something positive has proved successful. As usual, something sinister is lurking in the streets of the Barrel. The gang must be brought together to survive. All characters and settings are a product of the brilliant Leigh Bardugo's grishaverse

Nikolai needs a political marriage, and after discussions with the wealthy Kerch merch Jan Van Eck, he sails across the sea to meet his arranged husband Wylan Van Eck. How will Jesper feel about this arrangement? How will Kaz react?

The crows are back after years apart and after a few drinks and a bit of catching up, they learn that Kaz and Inej are now together. What's more, is that they have a... Yadira tilted her head. "You're Uncle Kaz," she decided. Both Jesper and Kaz glanced down at her in surprise. "I like your hat." "Uncle Kaz?" Jesper repeated. He hadn't even mentioned Kaz's existence to her. Yadira nodded. "That's what Aunt Inej said I should call him." Aunt Inej. Saints, he loved that girl. She really did love chaos in her own special way - and it looked as if she had decided to pass it down to Yadira. Kaz looked as though someone had hit him repeatedly with his own cane. "You can just call me Kaz." "But she said not to." "But I'm saying something else." "Aunt Inej gave me five kruge," Yadira told him, patting her pockets so they jingled. She looked him up and down. "Maybe you should give me something if you want me to stop." Or Jesper tries to help a child one time and now this has happened... Mainly I just wanted a cute kid to interact with a bunch of criminals, though.

In the present: Inej has returned to Ketterdam and is struggling with her grief. It's been five years, and she's not sure how to move on. She's known grief for so long, she isn't sure she can un-know it Five years ago: Kaz and Inej have been learning to remove their armor, piece by piece. Then, one night, tragedy strikes. Grief is the price we pay for love, but is it worth it after all? Jesper and Wylan met in their past life, and were now both immortals in a separate world. Wylan is a god on the Crow Council, and Jesper is a minor god/convict in the capital. While it was easy to play off as it was Jesper's endless skills with a gun and the uncanny ability to talk himself out of almost every situation he found himself in. It would take one particular job Kaz takes on for the crows to start to see the deeper reason Kaz kept Jesper around.
