Estrèm- nimistä maata hallitsevat maagit, joiden valta ulottuu kaikkiin maan kolkkiin. He keräävät oppilaita ympäri maata ja vievät heidät koulutettaviksi omiin kaupunkeihinsa. Maagit vievät mukanaan myös Irena - nimisen 6-vuotiaan tytön, jolla on uskomattomat tiedot ja taidot demoneista, mutta ei paljoakaan taitoja magian suhteen. Irenan täyttäessä kolmetoista vuotta korkea-arvoinen maagi Tom Daiveaun ottaa Irenan omaksi oppilaakseen. Maagi on huomannut Irenassa piilevät erikoiskyvyt, ja lähettää tämän vaaralliselle tehtävälle varastamaan Lokhin maljaa. Irenan tarinan idea periaatteessaan.
