Suddenly, the flags stopped turning, the drumline fell to silence, and the trumpet section brought their horns down from their faces. "None of them made it to school this morning." [[]] There comes a point in friendship when those peers closest to you become an extension of yourself, and one finds that they'll do anything to keep the others safe. Michael, Tony, Abbie, Lisha, and Ian are an emblem of that sentiment. For as long as they can remember, they've dragged each other through their lowest dirges and their highest flights. They would never do anything to hurt each other. That is, until the moment they are forced into the game of a shaded, masked man who abducts the five, and throws them into a virtually doorless stone prison with only three simple sentences and two manic choices to haunt their minds. "Three of you will walk out of here. Two of you will die. I'll leave it among yourselves to decide who. " Copyright © 2015 by Mya Brava #564 in Mystery/Thriller 8.30.16

Hayden Cross knows exactly what he wants. Back from a summer marching DCI, he's craving a well-deserved national win for his band. The Lovell High Marching Knights have been consistently second place in the region since his freshman year, losing by fractions of points to the ever-annoying Merrimack Valley Fightin' Titans. This year they are determined to win, even if it means breaking a few small, insignificant rules. So, Hayden and a few other section leaders sneak into Valley's first home game to spy on their band. It was all going to plan....until they got spotted five minutes in and left Hayden to fend for himself against some really angry Titans. Cameron Miller just wanted a normal year. Fresh off a summer DCI tour with the most annoying percussionist he's ever met, he's ready to enjoy and excel in the Class 1 marching band he loves dearly. He really should have just let the trumpets knock Hayden's lights out. Instead, he dismounted his drum, jumped into Hayden's arms, and kissed him. It was the first thing he thought of, don't blame him! But it was enough to get the band off Hayden's back and gave Valley an in to spy on Lovell, at least according to Cam's brother. But when a fake relationship turns too real, will Cam and Hayden let their fears tear them apart? Or will they find their own true meaning despite their uncertain beginning? Grab your instrument, don't forget your dot sheet, and play like you mean it as romance and rivalry go head to head in the 2022-23 marching season! Warning to readers, "Like You Mean It" contains discussions of transphobia, mental health struggles, and swearing. Read with caution.

His hands. The hands that keep the whole band together. How much I wished to hold them. His eyes. The beautiful forest green orbs that watched over us, both on the field and off. How much I wanted them to look into my own, drowning me in endless happiness. My name is Scarlet Miller, and I'm here to tell you how I fell in love with the drum major. (This will contain a lot of band vocabulary, as it is a book greatly involving band, if you don't know what a term means, don't be afraid to ask! I don't bite!)

Will Sullivan does not want to do this. He just wants to play his French Horn in the concert band, he never wanted to do marching band. Let alone do it with an instrument he's never played before. He's a horn player, not a sousaphone! But the mellophone line was full up and his brother never takes no for an answer. So now he's stuck on the seven-person sousaphone line for the award-winning Merrimack Valley Fightin' Titan Marching Band. He doesn't quit. He instead falls in love with an upperclassman on day one and ends up being dragged into more and more band events just to see her. And that leads to him actually enjoying marching band. It was a confusing start to high school. And it doesn't get better. He keeps feeling like something's wrong, like something horrible is going to happen at every step of the way and why does the mirror look so wrong and why is everyone in the world staring at him all the time and why does everything feel so weird all the time? And why does he feel like he's going to puke every time he starts talking? And why does it feel like everyone is going to figure it out? Freshman year is always full of self-discovery, anxiety, frustration, and some good things along the way. So how will it play out this time? With his first ever crush, too much touchy-feeling moments for his own comfort, rediscovering his love for hockey, and some laughs along the way, freshman year ends up going a lot better than Will ever thought it would. And he's pretty happy about that.
