​Hou Minghao, a brilliant and high-spirited marine biologist from Beijing, is shipwrecked near the Ryukyu Trench when his research yacht, Monkey, capsizes during a violent tropical depression. He washes ashore on a remote beach in Okinawa, where he is found by Minami Hamabe, a quiet artist from Osaka who has retreated to her grandmother's seaside cottage to escape the overwhelming pace of city life. ​As Minghao recovers from his injuries under the care of Minami and her grandmother, the two vastly different souls begin to bridge the gap between their worlds. Using English as their common language, they discover a shared fascination with the ocean-Minghao through the lens of science and music, and Minami through the lens of art and observation. While Minghao struggles with the loss of his boat and the distance from his Shiba Inu, Monkey, he helps Minami find the courage to "make a little noise" in her own life, challenging her to look beyond the surface of the water she fears.
