There are some memories you would give anything to forget. And there are others you would give anything to keep. I learned that the hard way. People think memories are harmless. Just fragments of the past, stored somewhere inside our minds, waiting to be remembered when we need them. They don't understand how powerful they are. A single voice can bring someone back. A familiar song can reopen a wound you thought had healed. A photograph can make five years feel like five seconds. And sometimes, a memory can become the only place where the person you love still exists. I know because I built a machine for it. I called it the Holochron. At first, I thought I was building something that would change the world. I was wrong. I was building something because I couldn't accept that mine had already changed. Her name was Adelaine. And before I learned how to preserve memories, I learned how much it hurt to lose one. This is the story of how I tried to erase her. And how, in the end, I learned that some things were never meant to be forgotten.
