"I can't believe you, again!" I shout the moment I enter our room, my voice trembling more from hurt than rage. "You always do what you want, never thinking about anyone else."
He stands there, rigid.
"I'm not answerable for every breath I take!" he bites back.
The words hit harder than they should. For a moment, I can't even speak.
"You are my husband," I finally say, my voice low, dangerous. "And if being with me feels like a burden, you should've said it long ago."
His eyes darken.
In two strides, he is in front of me, so close I can feel the heat radiating off him. He grips my chin between his fingers, forcing me to meet his gaze.
"You think I stayed because it was easy? You think I fought every damn battle for myself?" he asks, his voice rough.
"I stayed," he continues, softer now, each word striking straight into my chest, "because every day without you... feels like breathing without air."
The room spins.
I blink, unsure if I hear him right, the anger draining out of me in one dizzying rush.
He leans closer, his forehead brushing mine. "You're not my burden, jaan. You're the reason I even bother fighting."
For the first time that night, I have no words left, only the way my heart betrays me, beating far too fast against my ribs.
