**Winner: Licking River Writers Contest** After five years away, Jacks returns to reclaim his life- only to find a lush accountant with curves that fill out her clothes living in the apartment over his folks' pool house. Oh, the attraction is there- but Jacks doesn't believe in love anymore and Sophie can't trust her heart. Amidst murder, deception, mafia threats and a final race to claim the object that could redeem one of their lives- just one, not both- Sophia and Jacks struggle to define what love is, who they can trust and, in the end, exactly the price they may or may not be willing to pay for it all. It means she always has to remain connected to her insulin pump and she panics when she can't feel it at her hip. It means that she is covered in little scars from the multiple daily injections she has needed since age four. It means her pancreas failed, and since it did, she has suffered from and incurable disease that is constantly ridiculed. Despite being a legally disabled teenager, she is an advanced dancer at a small studio, honors student, bibliophile, speechie, and poet, as well as a member of student council and regular volunteer at the local animal shelter. A busy, intelligent, beautiful girl fighting a daily uphill battle, with the help of an old friend. Landyn is in the same boat. After becoming diagnosed, he has stuck to playing hockey and kept a high GPA, with Audralynne's tutoring. Even with the bulky infusion set, CGM, and pump, he remains eye-candy for the majority of the female sophomore population at Copperwood High School. Two teenage diabetics, both struggling to deal with the chronic illness, its complications, and everyday adolescent life. They've been close since they were both eight years old, but as real life challenges begin hitting them, will their friendship crumble? Will they be able to keep control of their lives and disease while living in the chaos of high school? Starting at the end of the road to ruin, this story of young love, hope, and maturity unfolds through hockey games, hypoglycemia, and hospital visits, reworking the normal rebellion of adolescence through the responsibility and struggles of diabetes.

❛ DEATH OF A BOY MARKS THE BEGINNING OF A WAR. NOBODY KNOWS WHAT MARKS THE END OF IT. ❜ Ezekiel Brusseau's mangled corpse hasn't even cooled by the time two people begin to impersonate him. Nearly two centuries after the nuclear war, Jesamine Haas from the rivalry Griffons, poses as Zeke at the heart of the Skóroi faction while the government is planning to use Brusseau's death to send Coen Finlay. Ezekiel is dead. Jesamine is impersonating him. Milo is an oblivious soldier. Coen is trying to infiltrate the Skóroi on his own. Mara knows a secret too many. My 2008 NANOWRIMO project: The Gray is a 'low' fantasy novel in spite of dragons and magic and horror. Giant spells won't be saving the day, and there's no mighty magic swords, in fact most spells aren't even out there in your face, they're implied. The Gray is set in a lone human city in a world where being human is stranger and and less common than being an elf, or almost anything else. Their community is Isolated, and protected by a a group of trained fighters and scouts with specific roles, who give up their own names when they take on The Gray. Walker, one of the scouts of The Gray, accidentally stumbles across signs that their way of life, and maybe even the world, may be threatened, and is quickly forced to face the fact that trying to save his home and people may require loosing them forever.
