He makes friendships in the war but tragedy will follow him throughout his time overseas. He returns to Australia after the war and becomes a recluse and a miner/fossicker in the goldfields of Central Victoria. He struggles with post traumatic stress and guilt. By chance he meets a young country boy from town and the two become unlikely friends. Through their friendship the boy learns about life and the old man finally learns to forgive himself.
