Elliot Maxwell doesn't like to stand out. She prefers to blend in, keep her grades up, and live without being watched.
When Claire has her first art show, she meets new-and-upcoming artist Lane Mason who invites Elliot to be a model for his next show; a photography exhibition.
Suddenly, Elliot is spending more time with Lane than with Claire, being stopped in the street and asked about her rumored relationship with Lane, and struggling to remember why she agreed to be the artist's model in the first place. All of which is taking its toll on Elliot and Claire's relationship.
It seems like overnight, Elliot's life becomes more than unexceptional.

"Wow," Lane breathed, lowering his camera to look at Elliot with his own eyes instead of through a lens. Claire's head snapped up, suddenly interested in what exactly the photographer was saying to his model.
"What?" Elliot asked, fidgeting with the collar of her shirt, trying to fix whatever it was that was wrong. She knew this wouldn't work. She told Claire at the art show this was a bad idea.
"You look...," Lane started, unsure of how to finish his sentence in fear of not encapsulating exactly what he was feeling. His eyes gazed over Elliot a few times before he settled on a simple, but incredibly true, "exceptional."
