VLSI is the process of designing and manufacturing electronic chips with a very large number (in millions) of logic gates and flip-flops on a single chip. It is about making a microcircuit by combining many MOS Transistors onto one chip. VLSI as a field of work can be broadly classified into two domains: front-end and back-end. The Front-end domain includes logic design, Verification, FPGA, and DFT. The back-end involves synthesis, timing closure, place-and-route, LVS, DRC, etc. Today VLSI devices are seen everywhere around us.
