Studying geology was not supposed to involve helping an alien prevent the destruction of his world. -- When a large crystal falls from the sky and lands in her friend's rural backyard, geologist Jade Harlow cannot help her curiosity. However, when it gradually changes over the course of a year, it becomes apparent that there is much more going on then she first thought, especially when there seems to be a body inside of it. It all falls apart when the Krisoala, the alien race responsible for the crystal, comes to collect it. The being inside introduces himself as Nesilva, a Krisoala himself. He's on the run from his own species, who have plans to create a new type of organism too powerful to exist in nature. The Krisoala are here, and they are one step away from finishing their catastrophic experiments. All they need is Nesilva. Except there's something else, something about Earth that appeals to the Krisoala, something they may have to take by any means necessary.

Here is where I journal about my writing experience for Open Novella 2020.

While out on the hunt, self-confident vampire Ashton for once ends up being the hunted. After being accidentally captured and almost killed, he finds himself indebted to the black witch Elizabeth, who has a pact with a demon and is on a hunt herself. When her old coven gives her a task that may redeem her from her past misdeeds that cost the lives of innocents, Elizabeth calls in her favor, and recruits Ashton to help her find out why more and more witches from both black and white covens are going missing. Thrown into a conflict between forces as ancient as magic itself, the two have to learn to work together quickly, while old secrets and promises of the past hamper their mutual trust. But soon it turns out that the pacts that bind them both might also tie them to each other, and their encounter might have been not one of chance, but one of fate. _____ I decided to give the ONC a shot again, and revive a short story from last year... and also use this opportunity to foray into another genre this time. This will be my first paranormal/fantasy/gothic horror story, and if nothing else it's supposed to be a fun little writing exercise to get me back into a creative mood after quite a long break from writing :) Since it's gonna be a WIP throughout the ONC and I want to spend more time on "explorative" writing rather than getting lost in in-depth planning, this story will probably be subject to numerous changes and edits, but I hope you'll enjoy nonetheless!

The start to Sereia Marlow's last summer before post-college life commences was supposed to be filled with sunny summer weather, lake life, and enjoying every moment with her best friends. Unfortunately, that's not the case. As Reia and her friends enjoy their first day on the water, she's playfully thrown into the water only to resurface as snow falls from the summer sky and the lake having turned into a winter snowstorm; sadly, her friends are floating dead in the freezing water with frozen looks of terror distorting their faces. There hasn't been a recorded death at Kepnick Lake in over 200 years, so no one in Kepnick is taking Reia's claim seriously. Without aid, it is up to Reia alone to look into their mysterious disappearances. Failing her duty as an apprentice Limiren, Valena looks on as the great church bells of Villdesong toll the death of Saint Friar. Killed by an assassins blade. With only a handful of hair and a bruised ego, Valena must work to uncover where the assassin has hidden herself before she and Valena's career disappear completely. But greater events transpire behind the curtain of darkness and only a match sticks flame can suss it out. Valena will have to face what lies just beyond the embers, and take with it the responsibility this knowledge comes with. The Matchstick Assassin was inspired by the Open Novella Contest Prompt #26: Every time she lights a match, she escapes into a new world.
