Cass Landry being the mysterious new girl with a tendency to practice magic illegally, Rebecca being notorious for lighting up every room she walks into, and Mallory being the second in command it-girl of Black Veil, as famed as she is feared. After a magical attempt to escape detention goes terribly, horribly wrong and their ethics teacher winds up dead (ironic, they know), Cass must band together with Rebecca, the girl she "totally doesn't like", and Mallory, another girl she doesn't like (but like...for real this time) to find a spell that can bring their teacher back to life before her situation becomes permanent. A spell of this caliber, however, requires that they venture into the underground world of their picturesque town, striking a deal with a powerful gang leader that not only raises the stakes, but gives them an even tighter timeline. And though as a witch Cass has personal experience with life and death, the pressure that she's facing now might just be too tough to handle. Luckily, she's not alone. When a mysterious message is sent out worldwide nobody understands the message. Except for Sadie, that is. She understands the message loud and clear. The stories her parents have been telling her since she was a child are finally catching up with them. Sadie embarks on a road-trip race across the country to get home, knowing her parents will have a way to save them. She's racing against her parents past and those wanting to hold them accountable. A novella for the Open Novella Contest III! Prompt #26: "Every time she lights a match, she escapes into a new world." My mother loved folk/fairy tales and would read them to me all the time when I was younger. Now that she's gone, reading these stories with her are some of my fondest memories. When I read this prompt, my mind immediately went to the "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Andersen. That story always made me sad as a child, and I wondered how the girl's life could have been different had she actually experience the things she dreamed of while looking into the flame. I hope you enjoy reading as Gwyneira discovers that life and wishes are more complicated that we initially imagine. **Trigger Warning** There will be some general violence and intimate partner violence in this story. Neither will be glorified, or graphic, but they are present. I know that these are unfortunate realities for a lot of people and that many read to escape the things they hate in their life and I don't want it to take them by surprise.
