Melody Piper has an important question for her father.

Love can be a burden to the heart as well as the soul, forcing one to look into a happier past. This might have been a story of tragedy. This might have been a story of hatred towards the world. Yet because love is a burden that someone wants to carry, this story is one that should not have come to pass. This is the paradox, the truth and the reality.

Two mismatched stepsisters. Both complete strangers. One new start gone badly wrong. When thirteen year old Nina Jenks' father dies, she's placed under the guardianship of her puzzling and maddening stepsister, Helen Daw. But why would she turn up now, after all this time? But can she keep the smartest little girl she's ever met fooled? Their lives were never going to be easy... Nina's new school, "St Malachy's," offers a fresh start for both of them but it's a breeding ground for danger. Child abductions are just the icing on the cake. And with Helen's big secret only around the corner, their family bonds are about to be tested to breaking point....

Based on the poem Girls and Boys Come Out to Play. The pied piper was defeated years ago after decimating an entire village. Only Grandpa was able to resist the song and defeat him, back when he was young. That's actually how he met Grandma. But now a new piper with a newer, stronger song is playing, and the village doesn't know what to do. Grandpa is too old to fight, which leaves his granddaughter. She is showing signs of being immune to the tune.
