...Imagine... Stephen Kings' Castle Rock, Maine in the Southern Appalachians... like the Addams Family moves to Mayberry, N.C...Normal everyday lives inundated by common insanity, bat-#$!@-craziness happening on a spontaneous yet disturbingly regular basis...Small town America takes a rude ride in the Looney Machine... ...Just like living real life right here in good ol' Bloody Burke County, Morganton, N.C, home of Broughton Hospital, one of the oldest mental asylums in the continental United States... ...So, when you read here the character is YOU. A normal, everyday joe with the same ol' job(less) status, same ol' bills to pay, same ol' habits (good and bad), same ol' significant other squawkin' the same ol' same ol' when all you're trying to do is LIVE your same ol' same ol' life... ...Then all of a sudden, on the way home from the local convenience store one drizzly night, you witness a trio of monkeys, (...are those chimps?) stoning some hapless old lady with what look like spheres of shiny metal. The woman screams pitifully for seconds until her head is smashed open like an overripe mango. Then the chimpanzees collect their metal balls, place them in the pouches they're carrying and swing off into the magnolias, disappearing through the trees as if they'd never been... ...And you're the only person around as the cops show up five seconds later shining spotlights in your face and exclaiming over the brutality of this fresh murder, right here, in Strange Falls, N.C... ...Welcome to the Appalachian foothills. It gets wild out here, sometimes...
