Fierce, brilliant, and newly licensed as a doctor, she has spent years fighting for a career that her controlling family wants to trade for a wedding ring. The deal was simple, they would fund her medical studies only if she married the man of their choosing. Now, that debt has come due. Asher Black is the formidable heir to Black Enterprises, a man who built his life around the boardroom, not the bedroom. He has no room for a wife. However, when his parents issue a ruthless ultimatum marry Morgan's daughter or lose the CEO chair forever, Asher is forced to make the ultimate trade. To him, Avyannah isn't a partner; she is the price he must pay to keep his empire. Ethan Eros Kozlov lives by a strict code, observation, protection, and silence. As he works for the elite security firm, his job is to ensure the safety of the Black family and their high-stakes events. He doesn't care about the gossip behind closed doors or the politics of the wealthy, he only cares about the perimeter. "But at the lavish engagement event meant to seal Avyannah's fate, the perimeter breaks. When a sudden moment of chaos forces the defiant doctor and the silent guardian together, Ethan sees past Avyannah's diamond-crusted exterior to the trapped woman underneath. Avyannah is ready to burn her world down to keep her freedom, and Ethan is the man hired to keep everything under control. In a world where loyalty is bought and every move is watched, Avyannah must decide if she can trust the man whose job is to keep her from running.

Holmes's friend, Mr. Trevor was dying as a result of a stroke suffered after he received a letter. Seven weeks earlier, Hudson an old man, had come looking for work. He proved to be as unruly an employee as could be imagined. He had taken unforgivable liberties which would normally have resulted in an employee's dismissal. He was often drunk. The other staff had complained about him. However, Mr. Trevor always let him get away with any infamy. Because Hudson was his old shipmate. Suddenly, Hudson announced that he was leaving because he had tired of Norfolk, and he was going to Hampshire to see Beddoes, another old shipmate. Now, Mr. Trevor had become thin and careworn by the ordeal. He had thought that the trouble was over when Hudson had left, but then came the letter, from Fordingbridge in Hampshire. It read: "The supply of game for London is going steadily up. Head-keeper Hudson, we believe, has been now told to receive all orders for fly-paper and for preservation of your hen pheasant's life." Holmes found the key. If one read every third word beginning with the first, there was an intelligible message: "The game is up. Hudson has told all. Fly for your life." Holmes had deduced that the game was blackmail. Some guilty secret had been the power that Hudson had held over the elder Mr. Trevor. And it involves the name of one ship ; ' Gloria Scott '. First published in the Strand Magazine, Apr. 1893, with 7 illustrations by Sidney Paget.
