Poe admira a facilidade com que Ranpo desvenda mistérios e seus romances, mas anseia por ser visto como mais do que apenas um escritor de quebra-cabeças(mais na realidade não é assim que Ranpo o vê) . Ele quer ser digno do olhar de Ranpo, daqueles olhos verdes intensos que parecem ver através de tudo,aqueles mesmos com o qual Poe compara a esmeraldas . Movido por esse desejo e por um impulso de coragem momentânea , Poe passa noites em claro escrevendo seu livro mais complexo e pessoal.
