Jessie, along with her six year old nephew, Davy, has always had a turbulent life. She and her sister, Holly, who was Davy's mother, are members of a well-known outlaw family in the year of 1872. Holly has acted as a mother to Jessie, growing up, as their mother died early in Jessie's life. Their father is one of the members of the Banks gang, though they haven't seen him in years. Also members of the gang are several cousins, an uncle, and various other non-related men. Holly became pregnant at an early age from one of the gang members, and Davy is her child. Holly tried to raise Jessie and also Davy away from the gang's influence. But the gang members will occasionally come to the small farm where they live and take supplies or take a rest from being pursued by law. Around a year and a half earlier, Holly met a man. Devlin Riley. Devlin is a Texas Ranger. He p and Holly fall in love and marry, and Holly has a baby, Owen. For the period of time that Devlin is a part of their lives, there is some stability for Holly and Jessie. He provides for them financially, and when the family gang of outlaws find out she is married to a lawman, they keep their distance for a while. Holly contacts influenza and dies. This story takes place after that, when baby Owen is about seven months old.

A short story of self actualization in the midst of despair.

In a land far far away, there was a girl, orphaned, living with her two brothers, she was the baby of the house and was pitied by the women of her family that took her in and tried to teach her about "life". She was taken care of by her brothers since she didn't know anything abut "life". Her girlfriends taught her about hair and clothes since that was the only thing they new about "life". Her mother had passed away from disappointment, and old word used for "depression", a 36 year old women with 3 children and a husband almost 15 years older than her that one day went to sleep and never came back up. Her father died from a heartbreak a year after his wife's departure, the neighbors speculate that he couldn't handle the responsibilities of the children and his heart just "broke". it really dawned on her that she wanted out of that life, she wanted to feel like her rich cousins always talking about nice boys who would ask them out or about the country clubs gossip, she wanted the "nice" life. It didn't matter that her dad would die a year later or that her brother would go away to the air force, she was gonna feel love and peace, and never to be questioned about the cleanness of a bathroom again. This is a story about love, bravery and anger, and how it changes the way or paths grow.
