After everything fell apart, the court made a choice Claudia never would have made for herself.
At fourteen, Claudia Salinger is forced to leave behind the only version of home she has ever known and move in with her older sister, Julia, and Julia's husband, Griffin, after they are granted full custody of her. But this is not the life Claudia wants, and she makes that clear from the start.
Julia and Griffin have built a steady home together. They have rules, routines, and a four-year-old son, Rainer, who does not understand why his new big sister is always so angry. Claudia feels shoved into a life that already existed without her, and no matter how much Julia loves her, love does not make the resentment disappear.
This story is an AU of Party of Five, where Julia and Griffin become Claudia's full-time guardians while she is still a teenager, and Rainer exists much earlier as their young son. It keeps the heart of the original characters, but changes the family timeline and living situation to explore a different path - one where Julia is no longer just Claudia's sister. She is the one raising her.
Claudia is grieving, furious, defensive, and hurting in ways she does not always know how to name. Julia is loving, strict, and trying to hold the line even when it costs her. Griffin is steady, protective, and fully part of the family Claudia is now stuck inside. And Rainer, too young to understand the history behind any of it, somehow still sees every crack in the room.
This is a story about custody, anger, rules, aftercare, belonging, and what it means to be kept even when you fight it.
Sometimes love is soft.
Sometimes love is the person who says no and means it.
