Prior to the events taking place in the book, he had to deal with keeping up with conversations, trying to act normal, dealing with the trifles of his family, and fighting his own internal conflicts and sensitivity noise. When it all became too much, Caleb Ainsley, turned to cutting and his parents became outraged at this. Caleb responded just as harshly and exploded on them. But the outcome wasn't anywhere near what he expected... Every human being disappeared in the blink of an eye, and he was left completely alone... Left with his troubles and his thoughts.
