The idea of a free Palestine has existed for a number of years and is intricately linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel has occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip since the Six-Day War in 1967; these areas are recognised as Palestinian territory under international law. Israeli settlers have built up colonies in these areas over the years, displacing more Palestinians and dividing their property. Over the years, other groups have emerged within the Palestinian resistance movement, including Fatah, the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO), and more recently, Hamas. These parties have used a variety of strategies in their fight for Palestinian freedom and self-determination, from armed conflict to diplomatic.
