Ethnographic SciFi has a focus on societies - they may be alien, they may be human either on a dystopian earth or in a distant future on a colony planet. Quite often, two or more different cultures will clash or have to find a way in dealing with each other. Believable world building and differentiated aliens are important features of these stories.
