The cafeteria was deathly silent. Students stood with their food untouched, mouths hanging open and eyes wide as saucers.
My own eyes danced and laughed as I watched their expressions. "Moral of the story? Stay on my good side."

Young sixteen-year-old Zakala Comorosa grew up in the city of Alabaster, famous for its School of Magic - the best in the world for training aspiring magicians and prodigies. Zaka hasn't thought about applying for the School, however. Orphaned at the age of ten, she was forced to make a living by offering spell-casting services on the streets. Money is sufficient, and life is good.
But when she is offered a chance for admission to the School, she hesitantly accepts, and life is never the same. Stuck with a bunch of twelve-year-old first-year students, enduring lessons on spells so simple she could cast them in her sleep, her only comfort is in the strength of the magic she owns - something so powerful no one has yet realized it - and in sixteen-year-old Rivlor Mykviner, a Year 5 student who befriends her.
Driven by anger, something she has never been good at controlling, the magic Zakala performs is enough to keep the entire school on edge - at least, for those who continuously try to torment her and tease her about the fact that she's stuck in Year 1. Rivlor, however, is determined to break Zakala's tough outer exterior. He knows that underneath lies not only the most powerful magic the school has ever seen, but also a soft heart - something only a boy like him could bring out.
