When a young couple moves to a new area, they decide to explore the nearby forest. What begins as a peaceful walk quickly turns strange when the forest seems to change around them. As they struggle with hunger, fear, and paranoia, they discover an abandoned lumber mill filled with varnish. One by one, members of the group begin to disappear or die under increasingly mysterious circumstances. Their writings reveal that something in the forest is hunting them. Back in the present, the husband follows the notebook's clues and discovers a camera containing the final recording of one of the survivors. The footage reveals the horrifying identity of the creature behind the deaths: the Watcher of Varnish. But the story does not end there. After discovering the Watcher's connection to his own family, the man makes a terrifying decision that reveals the true legacy of the Watcher.
