SYNOPSIS: THE RAILROAD STORIES
Author: Kyaw Kyaw (Mya Yee San)
Genre: Historical Mystery / Magical Realism / Cultural Fiction
The Railroad Stories is a haunting exploration of the lingering scars of World War II and the spiritual bonds that transcend death in the rugged highlands of Upper Myanmar (Katha District).
The narrative follows a young Track Master tasked with maintaining a treacherous stretch of railway between Nam Kham and Bong Chaung-a place where the veil between the living and the dead is thin. Every night, the camp is shaken by the roar of a "Phantom Steam Locomotive"-a ghost engine from the 1940s that continues to run on modern tracks.
Guided by the enigmatic hermit U Phyu Thee and local man Ko Toe Toe, the Track Master uncovers the tragic legacy of Officer Mitsushita, a Japanese soldier whose spirit remains trapped, and the legend of an English spy's lost cargo.
The stakes become personal when Ko Toe Toe's young sister, Moe Moe San, passes away. Her spirit remains wandering the tracks, acting as a bridge between the living and the restless souls of the past. Amidst spectral flowers and the sound of a brass harmonica in the wind, the valley becomes a theatre of supernatural occurrences.
As a violent storm mirrors the valley's unrest, a sacrifice is made, and a traditional Buddhist merit-sharing ceremony is held to finally release the trapped spirits. Years later, the Track Master encounters a five-year-old girl named Kyi Moe San, realizing that the cycle has come full circle-the spirit of the valley is reborn, finally free from the shadows of war.
