Before Hurrem, but after Mahidevran and Gulfem, there was Gevherhan. Born in the Balkans(what later would be Serbian), her Christian name was Mina Pavlović before she was captured and brought to the Ottoman Empire, to Manisa and to the harem of Sehzade Suleiman. A year after Sehzade Mustafa was born, Mina would give birth to a daughter named Zeynep and would surprise many, including Suleiman himself when she was happy with a girl instead of a boy being born. Mina had said that she was happy because then none of her sons would face danger from their half or even full blooded brothers, which earned her annoyed hatred from Mahidevran but secret praise from Valide Hafsa Ayse Sultan. Safiye Sultan was daughter of Sultan Selim Khan and his consort Gulbahar Hatun. Being the only child which wasn't of the same mother Hafsa Sultan, she felt unwanted at the court when Suleiman's reign started. She was very quickly married off into a marriage which was everything but successful. She decided she won't allow his misbehaviour to her. She knew she was Sultana who won't allow anyone to disrespect her. She returned to Istanbul by the will of divorcing and searching for happy life, but her life wouldn't be so easy as she thought so.

The series follows the reign of Sultan Süleyman (r. 1520-1566), known in the West as Suleiman the Magnificent. At age 26 Suleiman takes the throne. During his reign he gathers many sons and one daughter. Only one son may take the throne (not necessarily the eldest). During his early reign a concubine called Alexandra (Hurrem) catches his eye and sets his works on fire. Historically Hurrem is one of the most powerful and influential women of the Ottoman dynasty.
