Editorial in the "Backlund Messenger" Special Edition - An unpublished manuscript. "Welcome to Backlund, where the air tastes of coal and secrets taste of blood. Here, we do not fear dragons or Dementors. We fear Printer's Ink. If Hogwarts is an ivory tower, then Backlund is a machine designed to grind down humanity. The Press-the Fourth Estate-has ascended the throne. Typewriters clatter to the rhythm of war. Front-page headlines carry more lethality than a Killing Curse. 'The Lucky One' Tristan enters this labyrinth not as a wizard, but as a target. Beneath the suffocating smog of this industrial city, gentlemen in tailored suits are shaking hands with devils. Truth is distorted, honor is auctioned off, and justice is nothing more than a luxury commodity. Tristan must learn to fight not with spells, but with information. To use lies as a shield against lies. To sow seeds of terror through whispers and rumors. The enemy remains faceless. He lurks behind the morning papers, watching with a cold smile as society collapses according to his script. In the mists of Backlund, he who holds the pen, holds Destiny. And be warned: by tomorrow morning, the name appearing in the Obituaries... might just be your own."

Once again we are on the wrong side of the story. Were we ever on the right side? What is considered right in the eyes of the reader? The "villains" who were doomed by the narrative from the get go, or the heroes? Shown to be brave and mighty, saving everyone who deserved to be saved. Now if we started from a different perspective, from someone who was neither a villain or a hero how might the story differ? Could it possibly change the trajectory of the story or will the puzzle fall right back into place of the old. There is a possibility we may never know, as the story never really has a hero nor a villain, just characters who never got a chance to prove themselves. No one reached out to help, so they were forced into the shadows never seeing the light to begin. That is where we belong, the house of shadows, a family for the outsiders, those who don't conform to the rules of this story. The cliches are outdated, we create our own beginning and ending. Don't let the views of others define you, we make up our own bodies and minds, as they do theirs. What makes us all so different from each other? Our experiences? Backgrounds? Personalities? Or even ideals? We aren't all so drastically different. We can all find common ground, even 'heroes' and 'villains' are very similar in a way. They both believe in their ideals and that what they are doing is right for them. So what makes them so different? Hmm a question that might never be answered...

I've only played the first game in the danganronpa series, so beware.. DANGANRONPA + DEMON SLAYER In a world like the hunger games, the poverty are chosen to take part in the annual tarot games. In this world, there is no room for weakness. So when Novina Fujioshi gets chosen for the games, she realises that this is more important than ever. She has a home, people to get back to. There can only be two winners of these games, and Novina is determined to be one of them. But when her long term rival, and old friend, Nagito Komeada volunteers for the games, she can't help herself from feeling surprised. Who would volunteer for these terrible games? Why? Well. Deep in rural Appalachia, where the mountains breathe and the woods remember, Olivia's quiet life unravels the night something begins tapping in her walls. What she first mistakes for hallucinations becomes terrifyingly real - a presence that watches, mimics, and follows. Isa, her girlfriend, knows the signs all too well. Two days before the haunting begins, her tarot cards deliver a warning she hoped she'd never see again: The Tower. The Moon. The Lovers, reversed. The same omen that once tore her family apart. The same omen that marked the first time she saw the creature wearing the shape of a fallow deer. When Olivia's home becomes a hunting ground, the girls flee into the Appalachian night - only to discover the thing stalking them isn't tied to a house, a place, or even a moment. It's tied to Isa. And it has been waiting. With dawn approaching and the creature closing in, Isa and Olivia must confront a generational curse woven into the mountains themselves. Their only hope lies in a forbidden tarot reading - one that might rewrite fate, or seal it forever.

Kevin's Corner lives in that strange territory where everyday life and quiet mystery brush shoulders in the same courtyard. The story unfolds in an old brick courtyard tucked behind a warehouse on Caronna Richardson Street in New Orleans-a place where musicians rehearse upstairs, strangers drift through the alley, and a fountain keeps water moving like the heartbeat of the place. Kevin runs the place. He isn't flashy about it. Former military, steady hands, the kind of man who understands people without asking too many questions. He cooks when tensions rise, keeps the lights on, and manages the odd assortment of tenants, artists, travelers, and drifters who seem to gather in the courtyard as if the building itself called them there. Then strange things begin appearing. A fortune machine shows up in the alley one night with no explanation. The machine works-but its fortunes feel less like carnival predictions and more like warnings. People who pull a card start noticing small changes in their lives: coincidences that feel too precise, conversations that happen at exactly the wrong or right moment, secrets surfacing that were supposed to stay buried. Val watches it unfold. She understands patterns, intuition, and the quiet currents that move people's lives. Where Kevin manages the physical space of the courtyard, Val notices the invisible currents running through it-the emotional gravity pulling people together or pushing them apart. Around them, the courtyard fills with stories: musicians chasing their last good song writers who can't finish the manuscript that might save them lovers sneaking through the balconies at night drifters who seem to know more about the place than they should And through it all, the machine keeps speaking. Not loudly. Not dramatically.

I am giving you everything you need to direct your thoughts, your desires, and your belief in the right direction. I know, just as others do, that life is a bumpy ride. Just when you think you're in control, an unforeseen boulder sweeps you off your path and forces you to climb your way back up. I decided that the most realistic, and absolute best way to give you guidance is to give it to you from whatever position in life you may find yourself in. This book is not just for the good days, but it's for the lost days, too. It's the key to remembering that you are in control. Every step of life can be seen through tarot - potential, power, creativity, education, determination, fairness, and transformation. Life is all over the spectrum, and tarot represents this as well - distractions, repression, scarcity, pressure, conflict, lack of control, and self-doubt. I am giving to you the power of the Law of Attraction. I am giving you a constant reminder that everything which you believe, everything that you think throughout your day has power beyond imagination. Now, let me show you how to use it.

Like most beginnings, the Lies the Cards Tell project deserves a little backstory. I had a little spark of an idea. I wanted to base a short story on each tarot card. It's been done and I never could quite get a unique enough twist to make it worthwhile. Thus, that little ember smouldered in the back of my head for a while. The fire ignited when a writing tip for using tarot card readings to break out of writer's block wedged itself in my brain and I needed a novel idea for NaNoWriMo 2014. Why not write a novel starting each day with a full tarot reading? Brilliant. Then life came along and had its way with that idea. Lies the Cards Tell was more than a novel so continuing it without the community aspect of NaNoWriMo felt incomplete so I passed it over for other ideas and moved on. But like any good tarot reading it lingers and nags until you accept the lesson it holds. Being a sci-fi and futurology nerd, I have a bit of a love affair with open source concepts and I believe even though we have to find a way to make a living on this earth, information wants to be free, evolve and grow. Lies the Cards Tell proved the perfect candidate to take directly to the reader in a weekly format. It allows me to open up the often rigid publication process and let you, the reader, have some fun. Every week I grab a deck out of my beloved tarot collection and do a reading. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy Lies the Cards Tell as much as I enjoy working on it. If you want to follow along with the bonus features and author's note check out https://liesthecardstell.wordpress.com/ for weekly updates.
