In a world where names are ripped away and freedom is a distant memory, rules govern every part of life. Rules and guards.
Captured as a young child and stripped of her identity in what she's always known as the reeducation home, 34223 knows the rules of the Snares by heart. No talking after dark. No names, only numbers. No talking back. And no escape. She's seen first-hand what breaking these rules can do. But some rules have to be broken.
When she discovers a transport list in the making while searching for the name of a young girl in her barracks, she risks everything to find out what it could possibly lead to.
As she, her younger brother turned guard, and friend she's always known as "Stone" find out as much as they can about this transport and its destination, the rift movement's capital, a heart of power and control, the guards have caught onto the fact that she knows too much.
And they'll do anything they can to stop her. After all, they've spent their lives learning to disregard themselves for the good of the camp.
With danger at every turn, a brother being torn further away from her every moment, and a lost past worth dying for, she must navigate the Snares's cruel system and decide how she will get out of this transport. And who she is willing to save in the process.
